What is descaling in stainless steel systems?

Descaling removes weld scale, oxide films, heat tint, and stubborn deposits that stay on stainless steel after fabrication, welding, heat treatment, or hard service conditions. These layers are not just cosmetic. If they are left in place, they weaken the steel's corrosion resistance and make later passivation less effective. Descaling clears them off so the surface underneath is clean and sound.

Why descaling matters

Scale and heat tint sit on top of the steel and hide the clean metal beneath. Left alone, they can trap contamination, invite corrosion, and get in the way of passivation. Removing them first gives you a proper starting surface, which supports better corrosion resistance and a more stable passive layer. When scale is left in place, passivation often does not perform as well.

When to Descale

When is descaling required?

Descaling is needed in two different situations, and plants often only think of the first one.

On new equipment, before it goes into service

After fabrication of new stainless steel equipment
After welding, which leaves weld scale and heat tint near the joint
After heat treatment
After installation, once the system is erected on site and before it is handed over
Before commissioning or validation of new or repaired systems

On equipment already in service

On any equipment that has been used for a long duration. Scale and deposits keep building through normal running, so a system that was clean at handover will not stay that way for years.
When visible scale is affecting surface cleanliness or corrosion resistance
During a shutdown, when the equipment is open and accessible anyway

What we descale
