Why does salt manufacturing equipment corrode so quickly?

Salt manufacturing keeps stainless steel in contact with chloride-rich brine, wet salt, and humid air for long stretches. Chlorides are among the few things that break down the thin chromium-rich passive layer that makes stainless steel corrosion resistant. Once that layer is broken, corrosion starts as small pits and shows up as rouge and staining on the surface. Inspection, derouging, polishing, and passivation remove the damage and rebuild the protection.

The Corrosion Mechanism

How chlorides attack stainless steel

Stainless steel resists corrosion because of a thin chromium-rich passive layer on the surface. Chlorides can punch through that layer at weak points, and corrosion begins as small pits that grow deeper over time. The pits release iron, which shows up as reddish rouge on the surface and can carry into the product. Because brine contact in a salt plant is constant, this happens faster than in most other industries, on both food and industrial lines.

Free iron left over from fabrication, welding, and grinding makes it worse. It gives chlorides an easier starting point. Removing that free iron and rebuilding the passive layer is the core of what we do.

Salt is not one industry. The client-facing split is clear: salt made for people to eat, and salt made as a raw material for industry and chemistry. The equipment, the purity demand, and the compliance pressure are different in each, so we treat them separately.

1Food Grade salt

Table salt, iodized salt, refined free-flow salt, and salt sold into food processing. Typical equipment includes brine tanks and clarifiers, evaporators, centrifuges, dryers, screens, iodization systems, conveyors, hoppers, and packing lines.

The purity demand

The salt ends up in food, so the surface itself becomes a food safety question. Rouge, pitting, and free iron can discolor product, add metal pickup, and hold residue in places that will not wash out. Product-contact surfaces need to be smooth and cleanable, not just visually clean.

The compliance pressure

The product is sold against BIS specifications, and food buyers and auditors ask how the contact surfaces are kept and what records exist.

2Industrial & Chemical Grade salt

Salt sold as a raw material: chemical feedstock, water treatment and softening, and other industrial uses. Typical equipment includes larger brine circuits, bulk vessels and storage, evaporators, dryers, transfer piping, and bulk handling and loading systems.

The purity demand

Here the question is chemical specification and consistency, not food safety. The buyer is checking sodium chloride content and the limits on other constituents, so contamination picked up from a corroded surface is a specification problem and a downstream process problem.

The compliance pressure

ASTM D632 is the ASTM standard specification for sodium chloride, and BIS specifications apply for material sold in India. Duty is heavier and more continuous here, so surfaces degrade on a different curve and need a different inspection frequency.

What we do here: the same seven services, applied to the heavier duty. Inspection and monitoring on the brine circuits and bulk vessels, derouging and descaling on long-running equipment, mechanical polishing and electropolishing where the surface needs repair or a low-roughness finish, and citric acid passivation to rebuild the protective layer.

Where corrosion and rouge show up in a salt plant

Chloride damage is not evenly spread. It concentrates where brine sits, where salt dries onto a surface, and where wet and dry cycles repeat. Common trouble spots include:

You do not have to move the plant to get the surface fixed. We work both ways.

At your plant

On-call service at your site, around your shutdown window. Inspection, cleaning, derouging, descaling, polishing, and passivation are carried out in place on tanks, evaporators, piping, and conveying equipment.

At our premises

Removable parts, spares, and smaller items can be sent to us for mechanical polishing, electropolishing, and passivation, then returned ready to fit.

For most salt plants the answer is a mix, with fixed equipment treated in place and removable parts handled at our end during the same window.

New Builds

Cleaning and passivation before new equipment goes live

New stainless steel is not clean stainless steel. Fabrication, welding, grinding, and installation leave debris, weld scale, and free iron on the surface. In a chloride environment that free iron gives corrosion a head start, often within the first season. Cleaning, descaling, and passivation before the equipment is released into service remove it and give you better corrosion resistance and a longer service life.
